Challenge
ILvA, intermunicipal partnership for waste processing in the "Land van Aalst" region, wants to evolve from waste processing to raw material production. In concrete terms, ILvA wants to transform its composting site in Schendelbeke into a circular eco-resource hub. The objective is to process the woody and cane-like fractions of green waste into biochar in a way that is profitable and healthy for people and the environment. This biochar can be used in air and water filters on the one hand, and as a soil-improving agent for green plantings on the other hand.
With this project, ILvA wants to build a prototype of a biochar installation. The installation should be able to process heterogeneous green waste into different types of biochar that each comply with different quality parameters (depending on their application in water filters, air filters or soil improvers). On the basis of this prototype, a number of technical, organisational and financial questions can be clarified and ILvA, together with the manufacturers of pyrolysis installations, can work out an optimal processing of green waste into raw materials.
