In brief
The Flemish government promotes the redevelopment of abandoned industrial sites by agreeing covenants with project developers. Agreeing a brownfield covenant offers a number of advantages in administrative-judicial and financial terms.
The entire community benefits from the redevelopment of such brownfield sites into socially-responsible or economically-profitable sites. The redevelopment of these brownfield sites allows extra jobs to be created, gives a new lease of life to what otherwise was a neglected neighbourhood, increases social cohesion and creates additional local income.
