Sustainable processing and disposal of peaty mortar

Challenge

To expand the container capacity of the Port of Antwerp, among other things, a new dock, the Second Tidal Dock, is being built.

The construction of a new dock involves a large amount of soil movement. Some of that soil consists of peaty mortar that will eventually oxidize to CO2 if exposed. This is not desirable in terms of minimizing greenhouse gas emissions and maximizing carbon sequestration.

Because of geotechnical characteristics, it is not possible to salvage all of the peaty sediment within the project area. Therefore, the Maritime Access Division is seeking innovative methods to process and/or reuse the peaty mortar in a sustainable manner.
