Solar potential in heritage context

Challenge

The current building envelope of the Concertgebouw in Bruges (roof and façade covering, approximately 10,000 m2) needs to be renovated. In the PIO project, the Concertgebouw wants to take advantage of this renovation to investigate whether the current terracotta tiles can be replaced by Building Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) with respect for and maximum preservation of the existing appearance and historical context. In addition, the Concertgebouw also wants to investigate how the surplus energy generated can be made available to third parties. The Concertgebouw aims to act as an example for other Flemish art cities and possibly more widely, whereby the project can set an example for the implementation of solar panels in a heritage context.
