Steering towards a sustainable food system

Challenge

ILVO aims to accelerate the transition to a sustainable agri-food system through a smart automated assessment of the environmental sustainability of food processing processes. This is achieved by making the current Food Pilot smart and connected.

Within the updated Food Pilot environment, the environmental impact is calculated using the 'Product Environmental Footprint' method and sustainability profiles of products and processes can be compared and used to make processes or products more sustainable.

This can be done through the development of innovative, smart sensors and supporting software infrastructure that allow a large amount of heterogeneous process data to be collected and converted into information in an intelligent and interchangeable manner. With this project, ILVO wants to serve the Flemish food industry and help usher it into the Green Deal era.
