VertiHydro - Vertical hydro installations for optimal use of space in the greenhouse

Challenge

The scarce space in Flanders requires thinking about optimizing the use of space, also for greenhouse horticulture. The project aims to increase the yield of greenhouse horticulture by focusing on growing at height and multiple use of space, so-called vertical greenhouse horticulture.

To achieve an increase in production within the limited space available, vertical installations must be considered. Cost, robustness, modularity, flexibility and optimal use of light and climate will be important criteria in the design phase.

Two different hydroponic cultivation systems will be developed and validated within the Agrotopia roof greenhouse that is under construction, where the systems will be demonstrated to growers.

After validation, they are made available as a testing platform to technology developers and knowledge institutions with the aim of achieving co-creation with growers and developing and valorizing innovations in the field of high vertical cultivation in a greenhouse environment.
