Circular water: From GFT leachate to potable water

Uitdaging

Verko, waste intermunicipal region of Dendermonde, purifies daily max.  120 m³ of complex wastewater and discharges it into the Zeeschelde. The installation of a new wastewater treatment plant is the momentum for Verko to bet on innovative techniques to reduce energy and chemical consumption, on circular water use on site by purification to potable water and on reuse on site.

Because of the complex composition of the wastewater - very high nitrogen value and comparatively low COD – mainly  due to wastewater from composting plant, a ready-to-use solution is not yet available on the market. To realize the intended water treatment, there are challenges  mainly for obtaining correct sludge morphology through proper sludge densification and also regarding the energy-consuming denitrification phase.
