Challenge
A remote interpreting service offers to the deaf the possibility to communicate with the hearing (and vice versa) at a distance in Flemish Sign Language. In order to offer the deaf the possibility to use a remote interpreting service anytime and anywhere in the future, several technical (hardware and software) and organizational innovations of the current systems are needed.
Currently in Flanders, several similar services operate side by side. This fragmentation is enormously confusing for users. Economies of scale through harmonization can reduce the organizational cost of a distance interpreting service and increase the use of the distance interpreting service.
The goal is for deaf users to be able to reach everyone by phone (e.g. emergency services...) and to be called by everyone (e.g. colleagues, doctor...) in their preferred language and communication mode and with protection of their own privacy.
