Position measurement of ships in locks

Execution

The contract for Lot 1 "Full non-contact measurement of ship movements using a photogrammetric technique" was awarded to Vision ++ nv at the end of December 2022. Implementation started in January 2023.

The contract for Lot 3 "Measurement of ship movements with a setup without human contact" was awarded to IV Infra at the end of December 2022. Implementation started in February 2023.

The contract for Lot 2 "Full non-contact measurement of ship movements using a freely selectable technique where photogrammetry is not the main technique" could not be awarded.

A site visit took place on 13 March 2023 at the Viersel lock, Zandhoven.

After a successful test of the measurement setups 'on dry land' during May/June 2023, the measurement setups will be effectively tested in the Viersel lock with a vessel during August, September or October 2023.

On Oct. 11, 2023, Apixa tested its proof of concept "in the wet" in the Viersel lock. You can read the press release here. The test could count on a lot of interest from the specialized trade press:

On Wednesday, November 8, the proof of concept of IV-infra was tested 'in the wet'. The results of the measurement setups were compared with the reference measurements that were carried out simultaneously. The evaluation shows that the quality of both measurement setups are equal to or even more accurate than the reference measurements.

Moreover, it was expected that a full photogrammetric measurement would require a very complex setup and AI-supported processing, which was beyond the scope of a proof of concept. However, Apixa's setup proved that an efficient solution is possible.

In the next step, Flanders Hydraulics and the Flemish Waterway are looking at the possibilities of an operational measurement setup.
