Challenge
Fire safety is a particular concern for welfare and healthcare facilities: after all, the users are often individuals who are insufficiently self-reliant in case of emergency.
A lot of alternative technologies exist in terms of fire safety in buildings. However, these alternative technologies cannot be used with maximum efficiency in existing and new healthcare buildings because their effectiveness in combined application is insufficiently known. A regulatory framework is also lacking.
Most alternative technologies can currently only be applied via a derogation procedure, resulting in a delay of the building process and insufficient legal certainty.
The aim of this project is to arrive at an elaborated assessment framework for alternative fire safety measures through research.
This assessment framework will form the basis for integrating the alternative measures into future regulations. In addition, the alternative fire safety measures will be able to be used more effectively and, finally, their more general applicability may provide a positive stimulus for further technological developments.
